I had one more movie I wanted to do in my Summer of 1993 series this week, but I’m going to hold off for reasons I’ll explain a bit later. This is going to be a short post, but I wanted to use it as a way to provide a nice summary of this miniseries I did over the last few months and set up a bit of what’s coming next in this newsletter.
First off, looking back at movies from the summer of 1993 – as I’ve said before, probably the summer that turned me into a movie dork – was a ton of fun. Yes, I was able to revisit movies I knew were great, like Jurassic Park and The Fugitive. There was some catharsis in writing about movies that are actually pretty bad (hello, Jason Goes to Hell and Coneheads). But the biggest joy was encountering surprise movies that I had never seen or hadn’t seen in years and realizing that there was a lot to love about them. In the Line of Fire, Hard Target, The Firm and Last Action Heroes were all great movies to revisit, and I really enjoyed the chance.
But 1993 in and of itself was a great year for movies, and a pivotal year for many actors and filmmakers. And, as I said, it was the first year where I was paying attention to it all as a budding film geek. And so, I’m going to continue looking at movies from 1993 throughout the remainder of the year. It’s not going to be a weekly occurrence, as the summer series was, but there are definitely some movies to hit. Richard Linklater’s second film hits its 30th anniversary in a few weeks, as does one of Quentin Tarantino’s earlier screenwriting projects. Later in the year we get arguably the most important movie Steven Spielberg ever made, and a change of pace from Martin Scorsese. There’s also a big fat hit starring Robin Williams, another John Grisham adaptation, and the advent of Tom Hanks as a dramatic powerhouse. Plus, the movie I was going to discuss this week will make a good entry for my Halloween-time viewing.
I’m not sure what ones I’ll hit, but there are a lot of big films worth a revisit, and so I’m going to pepper that into the rest of the year. If you missed the summer of 1993 series, though, here are links to all the entries:
As I said earlier this week, I’m going to take a quick break from this newsletter and reviews to start prepping for the fall season. I don’t anticipate it will be too long; I’m hoping to have my next entry out the week of Labor Day or maybe the one after. That will give me time to get a head start in my viewing, because my plan is to hit this fall with a vengeance, catching up on the 2023 projects I’ve missed thus far, closing up some gaps on older movies and, of course, continuing to keep an eye on current films and news.
So, I’m going silent for the next few weeks, but it won’t be long. And there’s a lot coming! I hope you enjoy it all!
