This movie is great, and this piece does a great job of pointing out what works so well, especially the performance that you never expected to see from Andy Griffith. The only thing that bugs me about it is the ending, in which he's caught on camera making disparaging remarks about his fans, leading to his downfall. As we've seen in real life, that wouldn't actually happen.. He'd weasel his way out of it, or his followers would just excuse it, saying they don't care and they like that he just speaks his mind. It's a pretty common plot point in movies, probably even back in the 50s, but now that I've seen how little certain people care about hypocrisy, it annoys me every time. It would be great if rich, powerful assholes could lose everything in a matter of moments, but they got to be rich and powerful in the first place by not caring about anyone else, so why would moments like this be any different?
