The Passion of the Christ is my favorite religious movie and one of my favorites overall. When I saw it twice in theaters back when I was 19, it actually helped me better understand and appreciate the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and to believe in the Real Presence of the Eucharist. (Yeah, I'm Catholic.) Clearly, you're not the biggest fan of this film, but your essay is fair and even-handed. God bless you on this Good Friday.

I wrestle with The Passion of the Christ, but I don't dislike it (if I lean toward sounding more negative, it's probably a push against the narrative in evangelical culture that it's flawless). I think it's beautifully shot, and I think it's very helpful as a meditative piece. I understand why it speaks to some people so strongly, and I'm glad it speaks to you that way! And I do think it's very likely Catholics respond stronger to this than Protestants...much of what Gibson leans on is from Catholic tradition. I'm really glad you find this movie beneficial in your spiritual walk!
