Excellent essay. This has motivated me to watch Stand By Me in its entirety. I have seen most of the movie, but only in bits and pieces.

My dad was born in 1945 (he passed away last year), and I'm confident that one of the major reasons he loved this film was because he was almost the same age as these boys back in 1959. The same was probably true of him and American Graffiti (one of his favorites), which took place in 1962. Stand By Me explores the transition of childhood to adolescence and American Graffiti covers the transition of adolescence to adulthood.

Oh, American Graffiti is a blind spot for me! I think I need to add that to the list!
